I Went To A Secondary LABORATORY School!

What was it like to be an experiment? Nothing unusual unless you knew you were being studied and practiced on. This thought never came across anyone who ever went to my high school. What caught us was the school name we had to embrace as our Alma Mater. The Don Mariano Marcos Memorial Polytechnic State College (DMMMPSC) created a secondary school, or high school, for the practicing teachers in their Bachelor of Science in Education Course. I was in it in the year 1988-1992. This school changed its name to DMMMPSC, before I enrolled, in honor of the Philippine President’s old man. Previously it had several names and finally I graduated in the same school with a different name; Mindanao Polytechnic State College (MPSC). My son, now in the same school, will be graduating in the same school but in another name; Mindanao University of Science And Technology (MUST). If there was a thought about our school, it was confusion centered on the name-changing rather than in the scary thought that we were a specimen. Nevertheless, if there was ever any mind that went that far into confusion, I never noticed. In other words, we got to the other end of the bridge as normal as can be… or so I thought. Now I am seeing something different between my school mates and other people who went to a different school.

The idea that we were different and set-apart because of the stringent screening required for enrolling in this unique state-owned school gave emphasis to our being “different”. The applause was not to our effort/action but to our achievement/trophy. We passed the screening. We were special. It stopped there. True failure is not in failing per se, but in failing to follow-through success. Failure is part and parcel of success. Thomas Edison failed 10,000 times before he got 1 success in his light bulb experiment. He saw his 10,000 failures as a discovery of 10,000 ways that does not work. He was never stopped by failure, not even when majority helped to stop him.

The best people cannot be stopped by failures, but the best of the best cannot be stopped by success. Those who passed my school’s screening were the best. Unfortunately, success stopped us from pursuing greater things. We resigned to being just the best among the best and never got to be the best of the best. It turned out that the best is commonplace. In the movie “The Incredibles” a line was said “If everyone is super, no one is.” This explained why majority of my school mates became miserably unproductive. It has dawned on most of us that we are not really the best we used to think we were. Our prime age is thinning fast, we age fast for failing to recognize crisis as opportunity. Invaluable time becomes lazy leisure instead of treasure and important commodity. We are missing-out a lot on life and what it has to offer. Time is running extra fast now.

But nothing is too late for everyone who has breath in them. Now can be a new beginning of pursuit to greatness. It starts with a change of mind. 

Change of mind; it’s not another psych-up power phrase. It’s not thinking POSITIVE. It’s thinking POSSIBILITY. When you have to revive a dead enthusiasm by speaking success to it, it’s thinking positive. When you have to revive a dead enthusiasm by SEEING success despite of it, it’s thinking possibility.

Repent is the English word for change of mind in Greek. It is not a resolute remorse for something wrong that was done in the past. It is simply change of the way one thinks. Come to think of it, the greatest teacher said of it “the kingdom of GOD is at hand”. He just required something so simple: Repent. Simply change your mind because here in this so-called kingdom lay unlimited possibilities.

my death sentence was served!

HE has done the same for you.

“Behold the Lamb of GOD, who takes away the sins of the world!” (Jn. 1:29)
